Retirement and old-age pension

The old-age pension is not a retirement

It is a BPS welfare benefit for older people without sufficient resources who cannot access a contributory pension. It does not require having made contributions.

Requirements

Be 70 years old and have at least 10 years of residence in the country within the last 20 (not necessarily continuous, according to BPS), in a situation of lack of resources. Confirm the current requirements on the official site.

Amount (reference)

The monthly amount is around UYU 17,528 (2025 reference) and is updated periodically. Check the current figure at BPS.

If you paid into another country: international agreements

Through social security agreements you can totalize (add up) the years you contributed in other countries to access a pension. Uruguay has the Mercosur Agreement (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay) and the Ibero-American Convention, in force with Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, El Salvador, Spain, Paraguay, Peru and Portugal, plus bilateral agreements (Chile, Peru, Bolivia, Canada, Quebec, Spain, Germany, Austria, among others). Important: with Venezuela and Colombia the agreement was signed but is not yet in force, so that procedure cannot be done yet. Confirm your case at BPS.
